How to make Kunafa

Kunafa is a traditional Arab dessert made with spun pastry dough, cheese, and syrup that gives it a sweet taste. It originates from the Middle East in countries like Egypt and Palestine, and is usually served on special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk
  • ¼ cup of cornflour
  • 1 tsp of vanilla essence (optional)
  • 1 cup and 2 tbsp of sugar
  • ⅓ cup of butter or ghee
  • Kunafa dough
  • Chopped pistachio (optional)
  • Lime juice

Procedure

  • In a pot, boil ¾ cup of water and 1 cup of sugar for 5 minutes.
  • In another pot, boil the milk, cornflour, vanilla essence and 2 tbsp of sugar while stirring until it thickens.
  • Cut and separate kunafa dough and mix with butter until all strands are covered with butter.
  • Lay a layer of the dough evenly on the bottom and sides of a baking pan and press down.
  • Add the filling in the pan then add another layer of dough on top and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Pour the syrup evenly on the kunafa and garnish with chopped pistachio.
