Salad niçoise (French) pronunciation : [ni/ swaz], is a salad that originated in the French city of Nice. It is traditionally made of potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, Niçoise olives, tuna, dressed, green beans, tomatoes olive oil and served slightly warm. Niçoise salad is pretty sneaky. It’s the kind of meal that feels so classy and refined, but when you make it at home, it becomes an easy dinner to have any night of the week. There are two things that really makes a Niçoise salad stand out from your average salad: it’s core ingredients and the way those ingredients are assembled.
Ingredients
- 10 baby tomatoes, cooked and quartered lengthways
- 3 hard boiled eggs, halved
- 2 plum tomatoes, finely sliced or cubed
- 2 handfuls of green beans, topped, cooked and drained
- 1/4 pitted black olives in brine
- 1 can of good quality tuna in oil
- 4 lettuce hearts, quartered lengthways
- french cilantro for garnish
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- white vinegar 1/2 cup or malt vinegar
- 1 tsp hot sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- salt and pepper to taste
Preparations for dressing
To make the dressing or marinade, whisk together white vinegar, olive oil, hot sauce, garlic, salt and pepper.
Assembling the salad
- To assemble this extraordinary salad, lay the lettuce leaves onto a large plate and add onion, tomatoes, potatoes, tuna and drizzle beans over the dressing.
- Add the eggs, olives and French cilantro for garnish.
- Drizzle the already made salad dressing and enjoy !
