Pickled onions are pretty good for breakfast like sandwiches, with vegetables like crispy roasted potatoes, and with main dishes like grilled chicken and pizza. Making pickled onions is easy to make under a short period of time and that too with simple things you can always find in your kitchen. Pickled onions are basically made with red onions, not necessarily though as other onions are fine to use too but red onions tend to give it that beautiful attractive color and distinct flavor; you’ll need apple cider or any other kind of vinegar (except balsamic vinegar), sugar or maple syrup, salt, very warm water, and a jar or bowl (preferably a bowl).
Ingredients
- 1 red onion (thinly sliced)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar or maple syrup ( I used maple syrup)
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar or any other vinegar ( I used white vinegar)
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 bay leaves
- 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
- 2 pieces garlic (sliced)
- 2 pieces cayenne pepper
Procedure
Making this pickled onions is stress free from start to finish; simply follow the steps below:
Slice the red onions as thin as you can. I used a sharp knife and it worked well too. Slice the garlic as well and set aside.

Stuff all the red onions, garlic, cayenne pepper, bay leaves and fennel seed in the jar of your choice. A bowl works too but a jar is easier to store in the fridge.

In a meauring cup, add vinegar, maple syrup, salt, and warm or hot water(not boiling water). Stir to dissolve the sugar and salt.

Pour the pickling mixture over the sliced onions, making sure they are immersed in the liquid, and then set for an hour (leave jar open).

After an hour, cover and store in the fridge for up to three weeks.

Enjoy!
